E. Robert Marks, M.D.
Program Director
Dr. Marks serves the combined role of Program Director and Designated Institutional
Official. He graduated in 1991 from West Virginia Wesleyan College with a bachelor’s
degree in biology and chemistry. He graduated in 1995 from Marshall University School
of Medicine then completed his residency at Wheeling Hospital in 1998 after serving
as chief resident. Marks was in rural Family Medicine and served a part time faculty
role from 1998 through 2007. He became Program Director in 2008. He is a fellow
of the American Academy of Family Practice, a member of the Association of Family
Medicine Residency Directors and the Society of Teachers in Family Medicine. Marks
also serves as the campus physician for Bethany College. His interests include addiction
medicine and hypertension. Dr. Marks is most proud of our residents scoring above
the national average on the in-training exam and the five year accreditation of
the residency program by ACGME.
Scott A. Carlos, M.D.
Assistant Director
Dr. Scott Carlos is a primary care geriatrician. He received his bachelor’s
degree ion cellular molecular biology from the University of Michigan, and his medical
degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. Carlos served his residency
at Wheeling Hospital and completed a fellowship in geriatrics at the Hunter Holmes
McGuire Medical Center/Medical College of Virginia. He is a member of the American
Board of Family Practice Geriatric Medicine, the American Board of Family Practice
and the American Geriatric Society.
Timothy Knierim, M.D.
Assistant Director
Dr. Timothy Knierim is a graduate from Oral Roberts University with a bachelor's
degree in biomedical chemistry and from the University of South Florida with a master's
degree in science education/chemistry. He received his doctor of medicine degree
from West Virginia University and completed a family medicine residency at Wheeling
Hospital. He has completed course work for certification in travel medicine. Since
April 2005, Knierim has been a preceptor for the WVU International Health Program.
Robert Olexo, D.O.
Assistant Director
Dr. Robert Olexo graduated from Ohio University with a bachelor's degree in
health administration and received his doctor of osteopathy degree from the West
Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. He then completed a family medicine residency
at Wheeling Hospital and served as chief resident. Prior to medicine, Olexo worked
as a therapist for children and adolescents. He enjoys caring for the adolescent
age group. Olexo is responsible for statewide campus students from WVSOM
Part-Time Faculty
Catherine Evans, M.D.
Dr. Evans received a degree in medical technology from West Liberty State College.
She earned her doctor of medicine degree at West Virginia University and completed
at Family Medicine Residency at Wheeling Hospital. Dr. Evans has special interest
in women’s health issues, especially preventive medicine and wellness education.
Dr. Evans also performs colposcopy procedures.
Rich Irvin, D.O.
Dr. Irvin graduated from Bethany College with a degree in biology. He received his
doctor of osteopathy degree from West Virginia School of Osteopathic medicine and
then completed a residency in Family Medicine at UPMC Shadyside. He has special
interest in behavioral health.
Laura Miller, D.O.
Dr. Laura Miller graduated from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in 1999.
She completed her residency at Wheeling Hospital in 2002 and held the position of co-chief
resident. She has an active private practice Family Medicine with interest in Women's Health.
Dr. Miller also serves as an Assistant Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program.
Brad Schmitt, M.D.
A lifelong resident of Wheeling, Dr. Schmitt graduated from Wheeling Jesuit University
with a degree in biology, then attended West Virginia University School of Medicine.
Upon receiving his doctor of medicine degree, he completed a family Medicine Residency
at Wheeling Hospital.
Dr. Schmitt serves on the Ethics Committee at Wheeling Hospital and speaks on Ethics
topics.
Angelo N. Georges, M.D.
Internal Medicine Rotation Preceptor
Dr. Angelo Georges graduated Magna Cum Laude from Youngstown State University with
a bachelor’s degree in science and biology. He earned his medical degree from The
Ohio State University (OSU). He is chief medical officer at Wheeling Hospital. Georges
also serves as: preceptor of the hospital’s Internal Medicine Program for family
practice residents; is chairman of the Wheeling Hospital Department of Internal
Medicine; and is a member and past president of the West Virginia Board of Medicine,
where he continues to serve as chairman of the Complaint Committee. Georges received
the American Academy of Family Physician Award in 1993 for participation as an active
instructor in family medicine and was named by his colleagues in 1996 as one of
the tri-state area’s top internal medicine physicians. In addition, Georges is an
active member of: the Ohio County Medical Society; the American Medical Society
of Internal Medicine; The OSU Order of Hippocrates; the West Virginia Medical Association;
and various Wheeling area civic organizations and charities. He previously served
on the Medical Advisory Committee of the Upper Ohio Valley Health Plan, Health Maintenance
Organization.
John McFadden, Psy.D.
Behavioral Science Training
Dr. John McFadden is a clinical psychologist who has been in private practice
with Behavioral Health Management of Wheeling, W.Va., since 1984. He is also a 1980
graduate of Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital with a doctor of psychology degree
in the field of clinical psychology. He also completed a master's degree in psychology
at Duquesne University in 1974. In his current practice, McFadden provides psychological
and disability evaluations; forensic evaluations; psychotherapy with adults, adolescents,
children and families; biofeedback; hypnotherapy; stress management; and marital
counseling. He is a consulting psychologist, preceptor and lecturer in behavioral
medicine for the Osteopathic and Family Medicine Residency programs.
Thomas Wack, M.D.
Chariman, Graduate Medical Education Committee and Preceptor
Dr. Thomas Wack obtained his medical degree from the West Virginia University
School of Medicine in 1974. He has resided in Wheeling since 1965 and maintains
his own private medical practice. Board certified in family medicine, he has been
an active preceptor for the Osteopathic and Family Medicine Residency programs since
1977.
Sherry Sarcopski, R.N., B.S.
Operations Director
Sherry Sarcopski is the operations director of the Residency Program and Family
Health Center. A lifelong resident of the Ohio Valley and graduate of Wheeling Hospital
School of Nursing, she spent 13 years as a pediatric nurse followed by several years
in managed care, quality improvement and provider relations. Sherry obtained her
bachelor's degree from St. Joseph's College and is a diplomat in the American Board
of Quality Assurance and Utilization Physicians.
