Low-Vision Rehabilitation
Low-vision rehabilitation focuses on enabling people with vision impairments to safely and independently complete the daily living tasks compromised by vision loss. The visual deficits may result from age-related disease or neurological disorders. Those with low vision often have difficulty using their remaining vision efficiently and effectively to complete needed activities. They may experience difficulty performing many basic activities including grooming, cooking, paying bills or shopping.
The low-vision occupational therapy includes:
- teaching the person to use remaining vision as efficiently as possible to complete activities.
- modifying activities so they can be completed with less vision.
- training the person to use adaptive equipment and magnification to compensate for vision loss.
Part of the training may be completed in the patient's home and community environment to ensure carryover into daily activities.
