Compensation and Benefits

Salary:
First year: $48,183
Second year: $50,360
Third year: $53,639

Meals: Provided while on call through the hospital cafeteria.

Educational Leave
PGY 1: up to three days, $600
PGY 2: up to five days, $1,000
PGY 3: up to five days, $1,000, plus $500 for board review

Cost of the following courses: ACLS, PALS, ALSO, NRP

Book allowance of $200 per year

Professional Liability Insurance: Provided

Health Insurance: Various plans are available for resident and family. The intern/resident shares in the premium for health insurance, with the hospital paying a significant portion.

Benefits: Other benefits include dental, vision reimbursement, life insurance, disability, paid time off, employee assistance program, credit union, voluntary 403(b) retirement plan and other discounts.

Program Transition Allowance: Incoming residents are granted an allowance of $3,000 to facilitate the transition from student to resident.

Paid Time Off:
PGY 1: 10 days
PGY 2: 15 days
PGY 3: 15 days
(Paid time off is administered according to the regulations of the AOA and ACGME.)

On-Call Schedule: Generally, every fourth night for first year residents with sleeping quarters within the hospital. Upper level residents are required to participate in House Call as a required part of the educational program.

Professional Dues: AOA/ACOFP

Chief Resident: $1,800 per year

Miscellaneous:
Lab coats: two lab coats for each resident per year
West Virginia medical license fee
Holidays: six each year including New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas
Moonlighting opportunities are available within the Wheeling Hospital System with program director approval for second and third year residents.

State-of-the-Art Program

The Wheeling Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program is a fully accredited program covering three years of residency training. Residents receive a wide variety of training at the 276-bed facility with state-of-the-art programs and equipment.
